We are a group of physicians who proudly work in a small hospital in rural Colorado. Delta County Memorial Hospital is a 49 bed hospital with an 11 bed Emergency Department. We have 8 hours of double physician coverage during the afternoon and single coverage overnight. We have 3 nurses and a tech during the busy hours and only 2 nurses overnight. We understand the difficulties working without specialty care available and limited staff. We are dedicated to providing you with insights to help you overcome the same difficulties that we all face daily in a small hospital.
Carl Richards, MD, ABEM certified emergency physician: Emergency Medicine residency in Cleveland, OH at the MetroHealth Medical Center, which is a level I trauma center that has over 100,000 visits a year. Residency also included working in the Emergency Department at Cleveland Clinic, which is a quaternary referral center receiving patients from around the world.
As many other rural physicians, I found that I desired to spend more time with patients and less time consulting managing consults. I longed to perform the emergency care and procedures that were in my skill set but were being performed by the in-house specialists. I was drawn to rural Emergency Medicine for these reasons. I have since realized the difficulties in providing high quality care without specialist back-up, and I have seen the need of more education geared to this practice environment. This need was my drive to start the Rural EM Podcast.
Treve Henwood, DO, FACEP, ABEM certified emergency physician: Originally trained as a Physician Assistant at Emory University. I returned to western Colorado and worked in a rural underserved medical clinic in Norwood, CO. With a desire to master more of the art and science of medicine I returned to school and completed residency at MetroHealth Medical Center and The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
I was drawn back to my rural roots and its special challenges in the Emergency Department. Rural EM is a conduit to discuss and share these challenges in the pursuit of excellent care.
